Chromebook vs iPad: which to choose for your educational setting?

Both are excellent classroom devices. The right answer depends on grade level, ecosystem and how long you plan to keep them.

Student devices in a classroom setting

The device a district standardizes on shapes how students learn for years. This is the head-to-head — what the two platforms share, where they diverge, and how to match one to your students.

What they have in common

More than people assume. Both were purpose-built for shared, managed environments.

  • Purpose-built operating systems — Chrome OS and iPadOS, both locked down by design.
  • Stronger security than traditional laptops — sandboxed apps and controlled update paths.
  • Classroom management built in — Google Classroom on one side, Apple Classroom on the other.
  • All-day battery — both comfortably clear a school day.
  • Fast wake and fast deployment — less class time lost to setup and login.
  • Light enough for any age group — portability isn't a differentiator here.

The iPad

Apple introduced the iPad in 2010 and effectively created the modern tablet market. The mini, Air and Pro lines widened its range considerably. iPadOS gives a tightly controlled environment, and the device works with or without a stylus — which matters a great deal for early grades, art and any subject where drawing is thinking. Local storage runs up to 128GB, plus cloud, and everything integrates cleanly with the rest of the Apple ecosystem.

The Chromebook

Google launched the Chromebook in 2011 with a web-first premise: apps in the browser, files in Drive, collaboration by default. That makes management simple and sharing trivial. You get a real QWERTY keyboard, a wide range of manufacturers to choose from, and typically a lower entry price than a comparable laptop.

Adoption by the numbers

  • As of 2022, Chromebooks were in use by over 50 million educators worldwide; a 2023 report put iPads in schools at over 10 million.
  • The pandemic accelerated both sharply — Lenovo and Apple led computer and tablet shipments through Q4 2020.
  • Chromebook shipments grew fastest in the computer device market during 2020; tablets, led by Apple, posted their own strong year.

How to choose

  • Device type. iPads are tablets; Chromebooks are laptops, with convertibles available.
  • Student age. iPads suit younger learners; Chromebooks tend to fit middle and high school better.
  • Price. Closer than most people expect — it depends entirely on which Chromebook model and which iPad variant.
  • Support window. Chromebooks carry an Auto Update Expiration date. iPads don't work that way, though they do eventually lose iPadOS support.
  • Model choice. Many Chromebook manufacturers to pick from; iPads come from Apple only.

The verdict

There isn't a universal winner. Weigh budget, grade level, the software your teachers already rely on, and how the device fits the ecosystem you're already managing. Get that alignment right and either platform will serve you well.
